When I was a little girl my Dad made me a beautiful jewelry box for Christmas. Now I don’t think this was the first thing he ever made me and it definitely wasn’t the last thing. At the time I never realized how much planning and preparation would go into these projects. But my Dad is very good at that kind of thing. Coming up with ideas and following them through to completion is just what he does. But not everyone is like that. For some people coming up with ideas can be very hard even when you know something needs to change.
If you are just venturing out into the world of kitchen renovations for the first time, or even if it has been many years since you have renovated a kitchen, you are probably not too sure what to expect. And that is OK. First of all, you don’t need to be afraid of the design process because most companies (for example, Bigstone Custom Cabinets) will give you a design consultation with a professional. These design consultants can help you in the process of figuring what you like and what you can afford. They also know what is trendy and has good resale value if you are simply trying to spruce things up to sell.
The other big thing people wonder about is what the timeline is going to be like. How long is your kitchen going to be out of commission? Now this can vary a fair bit depending on what you are doing but the basics are this:
- If you aren’t planning to change the layout of your kitchen at all and are just doing cabinets and counter tops, if everything goes well, it should only take about a week (1 to 2 days to remove the old cabinets, 2 to 3 days for installing the cabinets, 2 days for back splash). If you want to have granite or quartz counter tops you will need to add an extra two weeks to the project.
- If you are changing the layout of your kitchen (removing walls, redoing flooring, etc) it will likely take more like 6 to 8 weeks if everything goes well.
Now it is always important to remember that mistakes happen and miracles happen. What should have taken only a day could take three and what should have taken a week may only take half a week. Just remember it will all be worth it in the end.
